Villages carry people's emotional and aesthetic perceptions. Memories of village squares with the design techniques of traditional courtyard houses. Featuring a gathering space under the eaves, a community cafe, a tea space, a familiar square, a youth tribe, and over 15 mixed-use formats, the cultural site "Muziji" was created. It serves as a hub for energy and dialogue, offering more possibilities for human connection and interaction.

The designers hope to create spaces where people can find the relaxation of nature and feel comfortable staying for as long as they wish. In their vision, scenes from their rural hometowns—such as family gatherings in the backyard, the chirping of insects and the babbling of streams on the hillsides and rivers—are among the most beautiful memories. These scenes and elements, filled with shared emotional memories, are reinterpreted in the space using modern, comfortable materials and design language.

Between Arc and Aspiration

This project envisions a comprehensive design for the communal areas of a congregate housing, which includes the lobby, lounge, gym, and children's playroom. The primary goal is to cultivate shared spaces that are not only interactive but also deeply focused on fostering a sense of community. The design concept is intricately based on a "bottom-up" curved aesthetic that gracefully weaves throughout the entire space. By incorporating a harmonious blend of durable materials—such as natural wood veneer, elegant stone, sleek stainless steel, and transparent glass—this approach creates a continuous and layered vertical experience that is visually striking. Furthermore, the layout embraces an open design that encourages social interaction while providing diverse functional facilities. This thoughtful arrangement addresses the common challenges found in traditional public spaces, including limited functionality, lack of aesthetic appeal, and poor integration.

This renovation plan aims to transform a dull old library into a lively, engaging space to boost students’ reading interest and time. The design uses a colourful scheme to create themed areas—warm tones for reading, bright tones for discussions—stimulating curiosity and focus. Irregular bookshelves and desks break traditional norms, offering flexible use and storage, while slides add both function and fun. Ambient lighting extends ceiling colour to the walls, visually enlarging the space. Soft lighting in reading zones and shelf lighting ensure comfort and clarity. Corners are equipped with colourful, comfortable seating for rest or group discussion. Interactive walls like graffiti zones and message boards promote creativity and engagement. This warm yet practical design encourages students to stay, interact, and develop a lasting interest in reading. Through bold colours, playful elements, and thoughtful layout, the library becomes a dynamic learning hub that redefines how students experience reading and space.

Teachers Lounge for Heritage and Dialogue

Nestled within the historic Maryknoll Convent School in Hong Kong, this newly reimagined teachers' lounge transforms an overlooked storage room into a vibrant, multi-use venue for connection, pause, and collaboration. Framed by the 1925 stained-glass window, arched beams and marble wainscoat — elements that could not be tampered with due to the site’s heritage status — the minimal intervention is both reverent and contemporary. Through bold furniture design pieces and a layout organized along a central axis that celebrates the symmetricality of classical architecture, the project is an assertive gesture that strengthens the dialogue between past and present.

At the heart of the space, a sculptural S-shaped sofa anchors a choreography of movement and gathering, creating zones for individual work, impromptu meetings, chance encounters and collective respite. Intentional design moves — including a geometric rug design — foreground educators' comfort and showcase how adaptive reuse can reframe institutional heritage for contemporary workplace needs.

This public restroom is near Kanazawa, Japan, a city that flourished during the Edo period as capital of the Kaga Domain. Today, Kanazawa produces 99% of Japan’s gold leaf, continuing a tradition over 400 years old. The interior features about 3,000 gold leaf tiles (200mm square) on walls and fixtures. These are crafted using the “Edged Gold Leaf” technique, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020. Unchanged for centuries, the method is vital in restoring National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. A black-based interior and indirect lighting enhance the brilliance of gold, creating a surreal atmosphere where golden spaces float in darkness.

By applying this traditional technique to a roadside facility, the project turns a functional space into a refined cultural experience.

It reveals the beauty of Kanazawa’s craftsmanship in everyday life.
