Daji Xiang is a landmark urban renewal project set within Beijing’s Central Axis, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Occupying a rare and valuable urban space, the former home of Chinese scholar Kang Youwei, the precinct required a careful balance between cultural preservation and contemporary commerciality.
Rich in subtle details, Lead8’s interior design of Daji Xiang invites discovery and encourages visitors to engage more deeply with their surroundings. The sunken retail interiors are woven within the precinct’s interconnected streets, squares and pocket parks.
Throughout the semi-open interiors, the design honours traditional Beijing courtyard typologies and hutong details – with grey tiles, timber eaves, and brickwork - thoughtfully reinterpreted and integrated with modern materials and forms. Hidden corners reveal delicate craftsmanship and playful features, like the gentle curves inspired by traditional eaves.

Experiential moments punctuate the journey: interactive installations spark curiosity; adaptable event zones invite impromptu gatherings; social hubs become backdrops for stories shared in real time. Every detail is crafted to amplify connection, movement, and self-expression—turning the public realm into both a destination and a cultural signal of youthful ambition.
